Cameron Diaz Biography
Cameron Diaz was born in 1972 in San Diego to a Cuban-American father and an Anglo-German mother. Looking back on her childhood, Cameron describs herself as "adventurous, independent, and tough."
Those all came together, when Cameron left home at 16 to see the world. For the next 5 years, she lived in Japan, Australia, Mexico, Morocco, and Paris. She had started working as a model early on after leaving home. The Elite agency picked her up, and shipped her around the world. Her credits include Mademoiselle, Seventeen, Calvin Klein, Levi's, and Coca-Cola. Despite her traveling, she managed to graduate high school from Long Beach Poly, in 1990 in Long Beach California.
She returned to California at the age of 21, continuing work as a model. On a whim, she auditioned for a big part in The Mask. As luck would have it, she nailed the role, despite no previous acting experience. Cameron didn't even have a grasp on the imporance of the role until after the movie debuted. Also playing into Cameron's favor was the movie coming in the middle of Jim Carrey's astronomical ascention to comic legend, so her role received a great deal of attention. It looked like nothing could stop her now!
But then she injured her wrist, screwing up plans to star in Mortal Kombat, and Bridgette Wilson stepped in, making a name for herself, while Diaz was stuck nursing her wrist. Instead of again taking roles in big-budget blockbusters, Cameron signed on to do The Last Supper, Feeling Minnesota, and Head Above Water. All of the films garnered mixed critical praise, but did nothing for making Diaz a household name.
Finally, in 1997 she returned to the big-time as Julia Roberts' competition in "My Best Friend's Wedding." The film opened to a huge box office ticket, and helped launch both Diaz and costar Rupert Everett. Cementing her status as a Hollywood heavyweight, Cameron turned in one of the funniest performances of the year in 1998's "There's Something About Mary."
Since her performance in "There's Something About Mary," Cameron has appeared in many more box office hit films, such as, "Being John Malkovich," "Any Given Sunday," "Charlie's Angels," and a voice part in the animated feature, "Shrek."
Since her career start in "The Mask," Cameron has come a long way. She is now know by virtually all and is more than successful with such salaries as 12 and 15 million dollars for "Charlie's Angels" and her latest film, "The Sweetest Thing" respectively.
Cameron currently lives in California.
